Campbell, Marchand step up big in Bruins win June 06, 2013
Heroes do not always show up on the scoreboard. Such was the case of Gregory Campbell last night in the Boston Bruins 2-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 4th line center played an entire penalty kill with a broken leg, showing the kind of sacrifice and perseverance required to win the cup.
Campbell may have played just 6:51 of a game that went into double overtime, but no one would argue the impact he had on the game. More than half of his time on the ice was spent killing penalties, and he was instrumental in keeping the Penguins at bay for 4 straight power plays.
Bruins coach Claude Julien had this to say about the gritty veteran forward:
"For what he went through, he showed a lot of guts to stay out there and to still try and play," Julien said. "Obviously it was a pretty serious injury, so that's just the kind of player he is, and it doesn't surprise me, it doesn't surprise his teammates, but certainly it shows the character of that player, and that's why we appreciate having him on our team."
As for Marchand, the explosive winger was at it again. Besides leading his team in shots (6) and takeaways (3), he assisted on Patrice Bergeron’s winner at 15:19 of the second overtime period. It was another solid performance by Marchand, who currently sits 9th in playoff scoring with 12 points in 15 games.
